The Art of Wonder

Inspired by the transformative power of creativity,
Royal Salute’s cultural programme, The Art of Wonder,
boldly intertwines the worlds of art and luxury whisky
in collaboration with visionary British artists.

Each year, Royal Salute invites a pioneering artist to interpret, capture and immortalise the spirit of the ancient craft of whisky making through their specialist medium, creating a lasting tribute to creativity.

These ultra-limited art pieces are designed to transcend tradition and inspire an unforgettable sense of wonder, offering a contemporary interpretation of the traditional pursuit of great art for a new generation of connoisseurs. Each piece is paired with a spectacular 53-Year-Old Scotch Whisky, meticulously hand-crafted by Royal Salute.

The Inspiration

During his visit to the legendary Strathisla distillery, Shawcross was inspired by the vast expanse of Time contained within the whiskies used to create the 53-Year-Old blend that would accompany his artwork. He decided to focus his piece on how time affects change, choosing to communicate this phenomenon through the medium of glass. Optical spun glass was used to create a breath-taking sculpture that distorted light and cast shadow, providing a captivating medium for Shawcross to explore the rich narrative of Time.

I was struck by the Royal Salute phrase ‘we begin where others end’, so the main thing I focused on during this project was the way that time is affecting change.
