Meet The Makers:
5 Questions With Master Blender Sandy Hyslop

Master Blender, Sandy Hyslop, on the year ahead.

1) There’s an exciting pipeline of new Royal Salute whiskies being released this year, how do you begin your creative process when working on a new blend?

Whenever I start to craft a new expression for Royal Salute, I always consider the inspiration behind the release and how best to pay tribute to it. As part of my training as a Master Blender, I learned to recall and discuss aromas in different whisky samples, and therefore develop my own mental library of familiar smells. This means that whenever I’m creating something new, I’m able to recall the senses from different whiskies and draw on this knowledge to curate a blend that is representative of the inspiration behind it.

Once I have selected the flavours that I want to experiment with, I will then meticulously taste different combinations to ensure that I am producing a blend that perfectly represents the inspiration and the brand itself and pushes the boundaries of Scotch whisky innovation further each time.

2) With Royal Salute expanding into so many new locations around the world, do you have any exciting trips planned for 2023?

One of the many things that I love about my job is that I’m able to travel the world to meet other distillers, blenders and figures within the global Scotch whisky trade, but also the end consumer. It is this travel that allows me to develop my palate with new flavours and immerse myself in other cultures, as well as speaking to consumers from around the world to ensure we keep up with the trends and expectations. This year, I’m looking forward to travel to India, South Korea and to countries closer to home too, such as Italy.

3) The past couple of years have been thrilling for Royal Salute, with collaborations with British fashion designer Richard Quinn and renowned sculptor Kate MccGwire. Can we expect to see more collaborations like these in the future?

Absolutely, we’re continuing to explore the unique inspiration provided by territories such as fashion and art. When thinking of a future partner, we look for those that are credible within their industry and aligned with Royal Salute signature attributes. For example, Royal Salute is a champion of innovation in craft and creativity, and the collaboration with Richard Quinn was the result of a shared passion for pushing individual craft beyond expectation. Likewise, we partnered with Kate MccGwire for the first expression in the Art of Wonder collection because her striking art has the power to captivate and enchant, just like Royal Salute does with exceptional Scotch whisky. We’re looking forward to continuing our exploration of these sectors – and others – and working with more talented partners.

4)What do you enjoy most about working with creative partners?

In my role, I’m extremely lucky to work with a range of creative partners, allowing me an insight into different sectors that I’d otherwise not get the opportunity to discover. I’ve dedicated my professional career to the craft of whisky blending and so understand what it means to devote your entire life to a passion. When I meet partners such as Richard Quinn and Kate MccGwire, I find it so exciting as I know that they’ll be able to teach me so much about their craft and we can work together in a really collaborative way, and learn so much from each other. Both of them were involved in the creation of the blend, with my focus on the complex taste profile and theirs on the luxurious and bold presentation of the expression.

5) What are you most looking forward to in 2023?

While I don’t want to give away any surprises, we have some very exciting launches in the pipeline. I’m working on a lot of different projects at the moment, always celebrating various elements of our brand heritage, all while looking forward with modern Scotch whisky production techniques and a focus on expressions that will appeal to the new luxury consumer. To me, the most satisfying part of each release is getting to hear from those that taste the whiskies for the first time and there’s one tasting in particular that I’m really looking forward to witnessing! I won’t say more than that, but I can promise that it will be a landmark year for Royal Salute.
